Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a process that ensures electrical equipment is safe to use 

PAT or ‘Portable Appliance Testing’ is also known as EET, or ‘Electrical Equipment Testing’

Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and an electronics test with a specialised portable appliance tester.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

Although there is currently no strict legal requirement for PAT testing, the Government has put regulations into place to ensure the safety and maintenance of electrical appliances. The most effective way to ensure that these regulations are met is through PAT testing.

Do I need to do PAT testing?

Testing is recommended for all businesses and organisations that use portable electrical equipment. Self-employed people should also carry out tests on their business equipment, even in the home. Testing helps to ensure that electrical equipment and appliances that you are responsible for are safe to use.

What is a portable appliance?

A Portable Electricial Appliance refers to electricial equipment that can be moved from one place to another e.g. computer, tv, printer, kettle, extension lead etc. Portable appliances usually have a lead with a plug attached.
